OWNERSHIP, CONTROL, ACCESS, POSSESSION ®

WHAT IS OCAP®?

OCAP stands for Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession. These are rules that say First Nations have the right to control their own information.

  • Ownership: Data belongs to the First Nations community it's about.

  • Control: First Nations decide how data is used and shared.

  • Access: Others can use the data, but they need permission and must follow rules.

  • Possession: The data belongs to the First Nations community, and they decide who can have it.

These rules help protect First Nations' rights and make sure their information is used in a way that respects their culture and choices.
